Before you move....

Buying a home and moving is a very busy time --- so many things to remember. Use this list to help make your move run smooth and add your own personal list of things to do. Check off the items as they are completed.

  • Booking the Mover
    You may decide to move yourself or use a moving company. You can choose to have the movers pack everything, pack just the breakables, or you might pack everything yourself. You may want to obtain estimates from several moving companies for comparison. Be sure to make arrangements well in advance.
  • If You Own Your Present Home
    Ask the gas, electrical and water companies to read your meters on the day you leave and forward the bill to your new home. Arrange for the disconnection of your phone and cable TV at the same time.
  • If You Rent Your Present Home
    Give at least one month written notice to your landlord and make arrangements for the return of your damage deposit. Make sure to get a list of what your responsibilities and obligations are with respect to cleaning, etc. so that there is no delay in the return of your damage deposit.
  • At Your New Home
    Make arrangements for the gas, electrical, phone and cable companies to have services connected the day the sale closes (possession date).
  • General
    • Prepare a list of friends, relatives, credit card companies, charge accounts, magazines and others to inform of your move. Get change of address cards from Canada Post and send well before you move.
    • Arrange with Canada Post to forward mail to your new address.
    • Cancel property insurance on your present home when new owners take possession; arrange for insurance on your new home on possession date.
    • Change the address on your driver’s license effective the day of your move.

*Don’t be caught without your utilities, cable and/or telephone.
It is recommended that you make these arrangements at least 2 weeks before possession date.
